January Programs and Events
January may be the time that most people stay inside but that doesn't have to be you. Kings Gap will be hosting two hikes this January leaving from the Pine Plantation parking area. Resolve to start the New Year on the right foot by joining the First Day Hike on January 1st at 2:00 p.m. This will be a 1.5 mile hike over fairly level trails. On January 22nd at 1:00 p.m., you can Hike Off the Holidays with this 2–3 mile hike intended to get the blood flowing. This is an easy-paced hike up the Rock Scree trail. While the pace is easy, the terrain will include some incline. Both of these hikes are free and leashed pets are welcome. Registration is not required. In case of snow, Kings Gap staff will bring out the snow shoes.
February Programs and Events
On Sunday, February 5th at 1:00 p.m. join the Flying Squirrels Habitat Hike you can learn about the life and habitat of the Flying Squirrel. On Sunday, February 19th at 1:00 p.m. join the Skunk Cabbage Forest Hike to learn about the life cycle of this amazing plant. These family-friendly hikes will be about 1 to 2 miles over level trails. Hikers will meet at the Pine Plantation Parking Area. Dogs on leash are welcome. Registration is not required. For more information, contact Sarah Berg at (717) 486-3799.
Garden Harvest Day 2017
On Sunday, October 1st from noon to 5:00 p.m. celebrate the bounty of autumn with the Friends of Kings Gap, Cumberland County Master Gardeners and Kings Gap staff. Admission is free although nominal fees will be charged for all “make and take” items. A variety of activities for all ages will feature:
- Kettle-Cooked Chicken Corn Soup
- Apple Cider Pressing
- Apple Butter Making
- Pumpkin Painting
- Bird Feeder Building
- Children’s Games and Crafts
- Hay Rides
- Mum and Pumpkin Walk
- And more…
Bring your appetite and spend an afternoon in the fresh mountain air. All activities will be held in and around the mansion area.
Holiday Open House 2017
On Sunday, December 3rd and Sunday, December 10th from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, enjoy this once-a-year opportunity to explore the Cameron-Masland Mansion, a gracious mountain stone villa built in 1908 as a summer home. Take a self-guided tour of both floors of the mansion in seasonal decor. Enjoy music of the season along with light refreshments including hot spiced cider and a variety of delicious cookies, which will be offered throughout the afternoon each day. All ages are welcome to attend this free event. Please join us for the festivities!
