Frank Masland was born into a Philadelphia carpet manufacturing family in 1895. He took an early retirement after WWII and began exploring remote areas of the US. From there he went on to become an advisor to the National Park Service, leaving his mark on national parks around the country and the world. Frank was an arch-conservative politically, in the vein of John Birch and Barry Goldwater, but he also embraced radical views on the environment, putting him in league with the most ardent environmentalists of his generation.
