Masland’s 1949 River Journey

In 1949 Frank Masland took his second river journey through the Grand Canyon, this time taking meticulous notes and bringing along a professional photographer. At the time, Grand Canyon rafting was reserved for the select few who could manage to book a trip with a small handful of outfitters. Today, far superior inflatable rubber rafts and an assortment of modern equipment that makes the trip accessible to the many rather than just a few. A dedicated Facebook page allows rafters to share their recent rafting experiences, which often describe the exact locations Frank wrote about in his journal.
